Earthquake Preparedness
From Tom Martin
Stone Co Emergency Manager

Well, as many of you already know, Stone County will be participating in several Earthquake exercises this year.  It is good that we be prepared as preparation is critical to success.  However, we should be preparing for this event, not just because of an exercise that is upcoming, but more because of the very real possibility that a major earthquake will hit Missouri.

So, did you know? Last week, according to the USGS and the Cooperative New Madrid Seismic Network, 4 earthquakes hit the bootheel area of Missouri ranging in magnitude from 1.6 to 2.6 and centered roughly close to Marston, MO, Howardton, MO, Sikeston, MO, New Madrid, MO, Matthews, MO, and East Prairie, MO.  Now, these earthquakes are not particularly strong, but they are becoming more frequent.

To that end, we should be prepared, in the event that we are needed.  The following links are from FEMA.  Please read through them and pass them on.  Print them out, save them, they could save lives, and they will certainly help you prepare for your family first. You cannot help others if you haven't helped yourself and your family first.
